Westmead Dermatology Westmead Dermatology participates in interventional clinical trials for skin conditions. Our dedicated team of dermatologists, medical officers, clinical trial coordinators and administrative officers work to deliver first-class care in the setting of clinical research. Our Unit at Westmead Hospital is embedded in the Department of Dermatology and gets support from the Department of Dermatology clinical staff. Our team has dedicated rooms for clinical examination and pathology collection and has access to cutting-edge medical technology and all the Services available at Westmead Hospital. The Westmead Hospital Clinical Trials Pharmacy ensures that all products used are at the highest standard.
Our Clinical Trials team participates mainly in phase II and III trials, but we have participated in some phase I and IV.
- Phase I clinical trials are done to test a new biomedical intervention for the first time.
- Phase II clinical trials are done to study an intervention in a larger group of people.
- Phase III studies are done to study the efficacy of an intervention in large groups of trial participants by comparing the intervention to other standard interventions. These trials used to get regulatory approval for the intervention (eg TGA and PBS).
- Phase IV studies are done after an intervention has been marketed.
Participation in clinical trials is completely voluntary and free of charge for participants.

Lupus Erythematosus
Lupus Erythematosus is a complex disease with a wide spectrum of clinical presentations. There are localised forms in specific organs and there is also a multisystemic disease (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, SLE). On the skin, the main forms are discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) and acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (ACLE). Skin cancer in renal transplant patients
Patients undergoing renal transplants are at very high risk of developing skin cancers, mainly on sun-exposed skin due to the medications used to avoid the rejection of the new organ. Advanced Squamous, Basal and Merkel Cell Carcinoma – opening soon
Most Squamous Cell Carcinomas (SCC), Basal Cell Carcinomas (BCC) and Merkel Cell Carcinomas (MCC) can be removed with surgery, but some aggressive tumours cannot be controlled only with surgery or radiation. Patients with Bullous Pemphigoid develop multiple very itchy blisters on the body. The condition is treated with medications that suppress the immune system and may put patients at risk.
