Aside from melanoma, we are also involved with research into non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) prevention and management. NMSC are the most common type of cancers in Australia and while most are not life threatening, it is an important condition which accounts for a high rate of hospitalisations in Australia each year.
As part of our research into non-melanoma skin cancers, Royal Prince Alfred and Westmead Hospitals have been running the Oral Nicotinamide To Reduce Actinic Cancers (ONTRAC) study over the last 2.5 years. The aim of the study is to see whether regular nicotinamide when taken orally is able to reduce the number of new skin cancers and actinic keratoses. We have just finished all patients for the 12 months follow up a few weeks ago and are now finishing the follow up visits. Hopefully we will get some interesting results very soon!
